Intaglio Printmaking: Drypoint A4 paper

Drypoint is the most accessible intaglio process. Pupils prepare a clear acetate plate prior to the school visit by placing it over a photograph or drawing and then scoring the surface with a sharp point such as a compass or scribbing tool. Tonal areas should be hatched and cross hatched creating a texture that will hold ink. Texture makes tone in this process so the more texture the darker the tone. Leave white areas un-scored. On the morning of the visit the pupils will learn how to prepare their paper for printing, ink and polish their plate, use a range of tools to create variations in tone and texture. In the afternoon they will use these skills to create variations in colour. Arts Creative provide two table top presses for these activities.

Duration: A school day (can be delivered over 2 half days if required)

Materials:
A4 Acetate plate provided by Arts Creative two weeks before visit. A4 paper and printing ink provided by Arts Creative.

Intaglio Salt Etch A5 Paper

Salt etch is a safe intaglio process which uses copper sulphate, a salt solution, to etch aluminium plates. The process allows for a greater range of mark making including fine line drawing to expressive, painterly strokes. The activity is suitable for A2 students and will build on skills developed through drypoint in the AS year. Image should be tonally contrasting with a range of white, black and mid-tones. Photo-Intaglio

A variation on the intaglio process in which the texture to hold the ink is created chemically using photo sensitive film. By adhering the film to plastic sheets, shaped plates can be cut in an experimental manner that removes the rectangular format of most print forms. Images can be either photographs or photos/scans of drawings/paintings. These need to be printed off on a toner printer - not a dye based inkjet printer. See examples here.

Materials: Photo-sensitive film, A5 plastic plate, damp paper and specialist inks provided by Arts Creative.
Pupils will need two copies of their image printed A5 size onto acetate sheets. Light fabrics such as Calico to be provided by the school/pupil if required.

Additional Cost: £1.00 per pupil
