Shared Education - Exploring Division

Examples of projects exploring Issues

Shared Education

My Shared Education programmes provide a non-threatening environment in which pupils meet, collaborate and get to know each other unburdened by identification with one culture or another. By focusing on developing artistic skills that enhance Key Stage 4 and A level curricula, participants learn that they share the same educational challenges and are encouraged to support each other in achieving successful outcomes. All programmes can be delivered as part of ongoing Shared Education relationships schools may have already fostered. Find out more about Visual Arts Programmes

In addition Arts Creative offers programmes that can deal explicitly with the legacy of the Troubles and the challenges of accommodating diversity. These visual arts activities allow for the exploration of challenging issues through accessible skills and supportive techniques. The programme design emerges from recent research into social division, its causes and how these can be countered. Culturally Framed

This project combined two printing techniques to create images that show how we are culturally framed by stereotypes derived from how we look, our accents or where we are from.

For Shared Education this programme has two elements.

1. Working with individual schools to create 'cultural frames' based on stereotypes of the other community/religion/nationality. Session lasts 4hrs (can be delivered in two half day sessions). Requires access to internet and inkjet/laser printer.
2. Bringing the two school groups together to create an inner image. Session lasts 4hrs. It would be best if this session takes place in a neutral venue.

Don't Judge a Book...

Young People and Adults from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds explored stereotypes and expressed how they saw themselves as individuals

For Shared Education this programme has several adaptable elements.

Working with individual schools to create designs for book covers based on stereotypes of the other community/religion/nationality. Session lasts 4hrs (can be delivered in two half day sessions). Requires access to internet and inkjet/laser printer.

The two school groups meet together on four occassions to learn new skills in a range of visual art techniques that will translate into the creation of their own book. These can be held in public spaces associated with one or other tradition, places of historical significance or neutral venues. Each session lasts 4hrs.
